Great Singles' New Years Resolutions

It is a new year and along with a new year comes new goals. Everybody has been busy talking about resolutions, plans and mantras. The new year brings fresh starts, new attitudes and the opportunity for a "do-over." Many people give quite a bit of consideration to their new year's resolutions. They contemplate and concentrate. They pick and they prod. Some people go completely overboard by setting themselves challenges that not only can't be met, but weren't even necessary in the first place. Other people try to set realistic goals related to individual areas of improvement. I do want to emphasize at this point that what may be a realistic or worthy goal for one person could be entirely unrealistic for another. In this article, I will be talking about resolutions relating to finding love.

Let's start with a few statistics on New Years's resolutions done at the University of Scranton. Journal of Clinical Psychology. Published: 12.13.2012

Of the top ten resolutions made in 2012, "Fall in love" ranked number nine, just ahead of "Spend time with Family." Not surprisingly, "Lose weight" was number one. Interestingly, almost all of the the eight resolutions before "Finding Love" can be instrumental in making someone a more desirable partner.

• Lose weight/get in shape
• Don't settle!
• Get out more/join more activities
• create a "wish list"

Here are a few more interesting statistics:

While only 45% of Americans usually make New Year's resolutions, people who explicitly make resolutions are 10% more likely to attain their goals than people who don't explicitly make resolutions.

39% of people in their 20s achieve their resolution each year while only 14% of people in their 50s do.

And, finally, while 75% of people maintain their resolutions through the first week, only 46% maintain them through the year.

Many people look upon New Year's Eve as a magical, mystical time. They regard it as the stuff fairy tales are made of. The night itself is often accompanied with rituals and symbolic gestures. There are often fireworks which lend to wishing on stars and contemplating the universe. One of the salient points of meeting your soulmate through the Law of Attraction, is to make room for another person in your life. While many people verbalize their readiness and desire to fall in love, they don't always demonstrate it. We often push people away from us by our subconscious actions. These are actions that most of us are not even aware of, like having only one seat at our kitchen table. In Rhonda Byrne's The Secret, she maintains that by not providing another chair, we are, symbolically,not inviting another person in. Put simply, it is important to create a place for a new person to fit into your life before you go out and seek that person.

For some people, the new year allows them to take a step back and reflect on their current or past relationships. It gives them insight and allows them to evaluate what works for them. Whether or not you actually write a physical resolution, with a whole new year in front of us, most of us are not immune to the opportunity to reflect and imagine!
